Leads Duolingo’s manga-to-anime expansion in Japan by shaping Duo’s character voice, developing original stories, and managing artists, publishers, production studios, and TV network relationships. Responsibilities

  • Set and uphold Duolingo’s quality bar across creative projects in the manga and anime pipeline.
  • Define Duo’s Japanese character profile, including tone of voice, personality, and backstory, while maintaining consistency with the global character bible.
  • Write plots and lead original story development.
  • Scout and brief manga artists and illustrators.
  • Build and manage relationships with publishers and editors to launch manga projects.
  • Select and manage anime production studios, including contracts, budgets, schedules, and quality.
  • Pitch concepts to TV networks and build relationships to secure a morning show slot.
  • Set visual quality standards for TV, streaming, and short-form formats.
  • Align global and local stakeholders and secure buy-in.

Requirements

  • Hands-on manga editing or directing experience at a publisher, editorial production company, or IP firm.
  • Proven ability to develop original stories and write plots.
  • Strong editorial or directorial instincts for character voice and storytelling.
  • Established relationships with publishers, manga artists, and writers, with a track record of getting projects made.
  • Working knowledge of anime production, including studio contracts, budgets, and quality management.
  • Connections with major TV networks and experience pitching concepts for broadcast slots.
  • Exceptional collaboration skills.
  • Business-level English, particularly strong written English, for collaboration with global teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience taking a manga property through anime adaptation.
  • Familiarity with vertical, short-form, and platform-specific formats.
  • Background in brand licensing, merchandise, or IP business development.
  • Experience with inbound or outbound IP localization between Japan and other markets.

Compensation and benefits

  • Salary range: ¥17,178,000–¥25,767,100 JPY.
  • Base salary is supplemented by equity compensation.
