Software Engineer - AI SDK

Responsibilities

• Design and build trustworthy agentic coding systems that deliver high-quality outputs.
• Design and implement Temporal AI SDK features supporting diverse frameworks and libraries.
• Develop expertise in AI application development patterns, techniques, approaches, and architectures.
• Own new features end to end and collaborate with other teams to deliver reliable functionality and a strong developer experience.
• Work across Python, TypeScript, Java, and Go.
• Serve as a domain expert on AI design patterns, collaborating with field staff on best practices and canonical examples.
• Debug issues requiring expert attention and gather feedback from the developer community on Temporal features and APIs.
• Write public technical documentation for Temporal concepts and APIs.
• Provide occasional expert customer support when engineering expertise is needed.
• Travel for team gatherings once or twice a year and optionally attend developer conferences.

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional work experience and a passion for generative AI, particularly agents and coding.
• Deep understanding of using AI to improve quality, not only quantity.
• Thoughtful, opinionated software development practices.
• Fluency in two or more programming languages and willingness to learn new ones.
• Strong experience with concurrent programming, including safe use of mutexes, atomics, and other concurrency primitives.
• Experience designing APIs and documenting publicly available libraries or modules.
• Strong written and verbal technical communication skills in English.
• BS or MS in Computer Science or a closely related field, or equivalent production software engineering experience.

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with Temporal’s programming model.
• Experience building agents or other AI applications.
• Background in machine learning, model training, data science, or machine learning systems.
• Experience contributing to large-scale distributed system architecture and design.
• Open-source software contributions, including to third-party libraries.
• Graduate degree in Computer Science.

Compensation and Benefits

• Estimated pay range: $160,000–$200,000.
• Eligible to participate in Temporal’s equity plan.
