## Job Description

## Responsibilities
- Conduct 3 months of full-time research from the San Francisco office.
- Produce rigorous, published research that shapes the open-source ecosystem and Baseten's technical roadmap.
- Collaborate closely with a dedicated 1:1 senior research mentor.
- Operate with autonomy on research problems without a defined roadmap.
- Embed fully with the Base Labs team in San Francisco.
- Contribute to building the research culture from the ground up.

## Requirements
- Enrolled in or recently completed a PhD in ML, AI, statistics, or a closely related field.
- Publication record or research portfolio demonstrating original, rigorous thinking.
- Care about the broader impact and purpose of your research.
- Ability to operate autonomously.
- Excitement to be based in San Francisco for the full program duration.
- Interest in building a research culture.

## Nice-to-Haves
- Background as a research engineer with production stack experience.
- Insights from non-traditional paths (e.g., operators close to real systems).
- Prior work that may not fit standard credentialist models but shows exceptional quality.

## Compensation
- $15,000 stipend per 3-month period.
